Bank

Be advised that banks in Italy have limited hours: they are usually opened from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm, and again from 3.00 pm to 4.00 or 5.00 pm.

ATMs
Buying euros before you leave from U.S. can be very expensive as most banks will charge up to 10% in fees. The best exchange rates can be found at ATMs (Bancomat pronounced "Bahn-koh-maht"). Check with your bank in U.S. if there are any service charges involved with ATM use abroad. Your bank may allow free ATM use through a specific italian network (i.e. Cirrus or BankMate). Be careful: ATMs in Italy will usually only allow to withdraw money from your primary account so make sure that your checking and saving accounts are linked.

ATM problems
A maximum limit of 250 euros is imposed at most italian Bancomat. Make sure your card can handle at least this amount in Dollars. If your card is rejected with no explanation probably you have exceeded the maximum withdrawal; if this happens, reinsert your card and try a fewer amount.

TIP: After insert your card, you will be asked to enter your four digit pin number. Make sure yours is four digits before you go and remember that italian keyboards only have numerics and not alphabetical caracters.
