Cellular phone plans can be confusing; using your own US cell phone can be expensive; using hotel phone to call home is expensive too and relying on pay phones can be difficult.

Placing a call within Italy
Italian phone numbers are comprised of an area code (two to four digits beginning with the number 0) and the phone number. Cell phone area codes begin with the number 3 while the area code beginning with the number 8 are toll-free numbers To make a call from one area code to an other, you have to dial the full area code and number; to call within the same area code, you must dial the area code as well.

Calling another country from Italy
To place a call first dial the Europe long distance code 00, then the country code (which is 1 for the United States and Canada), then the area code and number.

Cell phones
There are public telephone devices all over the city, but nowadays we are a costumed to the convenience a personal cell phones. So you can plan to bring your cell phone with you or buy one while you are here. GSM is a type of cell phone that is used in most countries in the world including Italy.
Before leaving your country, check with your cell phone service provider to determine if yours is a GSM cell phone; if it is not, you can purchase your world phone from several on line vendors easily and unexpensively. if you have a GSM cell phone, check with your service provider the costs involved with using your phone while your are in italy.
If your U.S. cellular provider does not offer iternational service, it is possible and often economical to buy a GSM phone complete with a SIM card. 

   EDI card
Another cheap option to call home is the EDI card, a telephonic prepaid card which you can use to call home both to landline or cell phones at a very inexpensive call rate. Buy one of this card just asking for an “EDI card for U.S.A.” at any tobacconist. You will be given a small paper with a twelve digit pin code. Dial 800 030 123 (toll free number) from any telephone and wait for the option a recorded voice will give you (for English press”2”) then follow the instructions. That’s it!!
