Health care for foreigners arriving in Italy

For foreigners, EU citizens and not, subscribing to the National Health Service (S.S.N.) ensures all health care provided by our Legal Order and implies equal treatment compared to Italian citizens; upon enrollment you will be given a Health Card  (TESSERA SANITARIA) which provides access to all services.

Subscription to the SSN has the same duration of the residence permit. It may be requested by another person – with a proxy.

For citizens belonging to the European Community and for non-citizens of the European Community

Instructions to subscribe: go to the ASL of the territory in which you are resident or which you have effective residence (indicated in the residence permit), with:

• personal identity document;
• tax code;
• residence permit;
• certification of residence or dwelling

In this case access to urgent and essential health services takes place behind the European health insurance card (T.e.a.m.), issued by the country of origin.

In both cases: at the time of registration, it is possible to choose the family doctor or pediatrician for children.
The medical card is made automatically when the ASL communicates the assistance data to the Revenue Agency and sent directly at the residence.

The shipment is made at the residential address resulting in Tax Register data bank at the time of shipment.

Membership is valid for the duration of the residence permit and do not decade during renewal: it can be renewed even presenting to ASL documentation proving the request for renewal of the residence permit;
The health card entitles to receive free, or against payment of a contribution (health Ticket) -depending on the region where you are - the following functions:
